What’s in a name? A lot, actually

Why the name “mahalo”?

The word Mahalo (MAH-HA’-LOW), most often used today to express thanks and gratitude, is actually much more than just a polite gesture of thankfulness. It conveys a powerful spiritual understanding that reinforces respect and appreciation.

The root words of Mahalo are MA, which in this case means “within”, HA which refers to the “breath of life” or “Divine breath of life” and ALO which means “in the presence of”. Mahalo can be roughly translated as "in the presence of the divine breath of life" and by saying it, the speaker both recognizes this in ones self, and the individual that one is thankful for.

The Mahalo Aleworks Ohana feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to make beer in such a beautiful and majestic place, utilizing the great bounty of the land. Our wish is to bestow thoughts of well being upon our family, friends, neighbors and visitors, and invite you to talk story over a cold beer made 100% in Hawaii. To you we say “mahalo”.
